January 04, 2016 - Ninety Percent Second Time Renewal Rate for ETCP Class of 2005 Riggers
ETCP is pleased to announce an extremely high renewal rate for its original certificants. A decade ago, over 200 riggers from North America gained their ETCP Certifications at LDI in Orlando, FL. Last November, 90% of the inaugural class of 2005 decided to renew their certifications as the term of their second 5-year renewal was due to expire. The majority of those who chose not to renew their certifications have retired from the industry.

September 18, 2015 - ETCP Council Approves New Power Distribution Technician Certification
PLASA’s ETCP Council has voted unanimously to offer a brand new certification focusing on Power Distribution Technicians (ETCP – PDT). The new program is in response to an increasing demand within the entertainment industry to establish benchmark standards and define the required knowledge and skillsets surrounding the assembly, use, and disassembly of power distribution systems for a wide variety of entertainment venues and markets. These include the corporate, trade show, outdoor event, theatrical, and motion picture/television segments of the industry. The development of the program has been fully funded by sponsorships.

July 28, 2014 - ETCP LAUNCHES SECOND SET OF WEB-BASED RIGGING PRACTICE EXAMS


The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP)
will launch a new version of  the practice exams for the Rigger - Arena and Rigger - Theatre Certifications this summer.  Both new practice exams will be accessible beginning July 31, 2014.

July 21, 2013 - IATSE Local One Certified 30 Additional ETCP Theatre Riggers
More than 30 International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local One members passed the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Rigger - Theatre examination in June, which brings the total number of certified riggers in Local One to 85. The New York Local now has more ETCP certified technicians that any other in North America.

July 17, 2013 - OVER TWO HUNDRED BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS ARE ETCP RECOGNIZED

January 15, 2013 - IATSE Training Trust Reimburses Cost of ETCP Certification/Recertification
ETCP announces the IATSE Entertainment and Exhibition Industries Training Trust Fund has initiated a program to offer reimbursement to those who take and pass any of the three ETCP examinations: rigger - arena, rigger - theatre, and entertainment electrician.

August 14, 2012 - ETCP PROMOTION FOR NEW THEATRE TEST FORM PUSHED TO OCTOBER
Due to increased interest in the Theatre examination, the ETCP Council has decided to push the launch of the new Theatre Rigging test form to October 1, 2012 instead of the original launch at the beginning of September.   To gather the statistical data necessary to properly score the exam, it is essential that as many Theatre Riggers as possible are tested during the month of October.  To further this initiative, the test administration fee of $675 for groups of seven or more will be waived for the month of October only.  Candidate application fees will still apply and score reports will be delayed during this time.

April 20, 2012 - ETCP WELCOMES GRAVITEC SYSTEMS, INC. AND THE PRG INSTITUTE TO RECOGNIZED TRAINING PROGRAM LIST
ETCP is pleased to announce that Gravitec Systems, Inc. and Production Resource Group (PRG) have joined the ranks of elite training opportunities by becoming ETCP Recognized Training Programs.  ETCP Certified Technicians who attend these courses will receive full renewal credits.

January 04, 2012 - 2012 USITT Paper and Pencil Exams
The ETCP examinations will be given at USITT's Annual Conference & Stage Expo in Long Beach, CA. All three examinations will be given at the same time and are scheduled for the morning of Saturday, March 31. Candidates who wish to take more than one exam should contact ETCP. Interested applicants must submit their application, along with supporting materials and fee, to the ETCP office no later than March 1, 2012. Space is limited, so submit your application today!

September 02, 2011 - IATSE LOCAL ONE CERTIFIES 19 ETCP ENTERTAINMENT ELECTRICIANS

NEW YORK - The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) has awarded 19 International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local One members with its Entertainment Electrician Certification.  Among those newly certified, is the first female ETCP Certified Technician in the New York Local.

April 20, 2011 - ETCP ANNOUNCES RECOGNITION FOR CONTRACTORS
The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council is pleased to announce an addition to the Employer and Labor Provider Recognition Programs:  ETCP Recognized Contractor. This program has been initiated to recognize organizations who utilize ETCP Recognized Employers and/or ETCP Certified Technicians on projects and job sites.  This designation would be appropriate for designers, integrators, producers, and production companies. It would also be applicable for venues such as performing arts centers, arenas, museums, theme parks, and houses of worship.

November 19, 2010 - 94% OF INAUGURAL ETCP RIGGING CERTIFICANTS RENEW

The Class of 2005 ETCP Certified Riggers who passed the inaugural examinations came up for renewal this November, as certification is valid for five years.  Two-hundred and seven Rigger-Arena and Rigger-Theatre certifications were awarded and 94% of these certifications have been renewed.  Those who are in the Class of 2006 ETCP Certified Entertainment Electricians will come up for renewal in October of 2011.

July 20, 2010 - NAVIGATOR AUTOMATION TRAINING THROUGH FISHER TECHNICAL SERVICES BECOMES AN ETCP RECOGNIZED TRAINING PROGRAM

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is pleased to announce that the Navigator Automation Class at Fisher Technical Services, Inc. (FTSI) has been approved as an ETCP Recognized Training Program. FTSI's four-day course gives students an overall view of the principles of entertainment automation systems and teaches the basics of how to configure and program an automation system using FTSI's "Navigator" hardware and software.

July 15, 2010 - ACADEMY OF PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY (APT) BECOMES

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is pleased to announce that the Academy of Production Technology (APT) has been approved to become an ETCP Recognized Training Program. The Academy's three-day course covers the concept of electrical theory, power distribution and networking for stage and studio. Course instructor is APT Founder Richard Cadena, who is an ETCP Certified Entertainment Electrician and Recognized Trainer. Now that the course is recognized, ETCP Certified Technicians who attend will receive full ETCP Renewal Credits.

June 01, 2010 - JR Clancy will pay for ETCP recertification of dealers’ employees
When rigging professionals earn ETCP Rigging Certification, it's a demonstration of their expertise in the installation, operation and safety standards for stage rigging. J. R. April 19, 2010 - Vortek Dealer Training Program Approved for ETCP Renewal Credits
VICTOR, N.Y. - April 19, 2010 - Vortek, a world leader in the design and manufacturing of automated rigging, offers a two-day, dealer training program. This course, Vortek Dealer Training, Automated Rigging Solutions, is now an approved ETCP Recognized Training Program. ETCP Certified Technicians can receive 11.25 ETCP renewal credits for attending the course.

March 10, 2010 - ETCP CELEBRATES 1000 CERTIFICATIONS

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is proud to announce that it has issued over 1000 certifications since the program began issuing certifications in November of 2005. These certifications are held by 877 ETCP Certified Technicians. Eleven technicians hold all three certifications: Rigger-Theatre, Rigger-Arena and Entertainment Electrician.

The deadline for submitting applications to sit for the paper and pencil examinations to be given at USITT has been extended to March 12, 2010.

July 09, 2009 - TEN NEW ETCP TESTING CENTERS AVAILABLE IN CANADA

ETCP is pleased to announce that there are ten new testing centers in Canada. All three exams are now available for computer-based testing in Ontario at Sylvan Learning Centres in the cities of Courtice, Etobicoke, Oakville, Pickering, Scarborough, Vaughn and at three locations in Mississauga. Testing is also available at Robertson College in Winnipeg, MB.

July 01, 2009 - ETCP LAUNCHES WEB-BASED PRACTICE EXAMS

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) will launch practice exams for the Rigger - Arena, Rigger - Theatre and Entertainment Electrician certification exams on July 15, 2009. The web-based practice exams will consist of fifty questions and are available from that date forward for thirty-five dollars at http://www.goamp.com/. Candidates should go to the "Candidates" and then follow the menu to ETCP where can choose one of the three exams.

May 13, 2009 - NEW ETCP COMPUTER-BASED TESTING AVAILABLE IN CANADA
ETCP is pleased to announce that there is a new testing center in Canada. All three exams are now available for computer-based testing at Robertson College, 265 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

March 09, 2009 - SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTER REQUIRES ETCP CERTIFIED RIGGING SUPERVISORS

In an effort to effectively insure life safety and maintain the structural integrity of the space, the award-winning San Diego Convention Center has revised its rigging requirements. Among the new requirements, the policy states that all rigging installations must be done under the supervision of a Rigging Supervisor who is certified through the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP). 

February 20, 2009 - NBC UNIVERSAL JOINS ETCP COUNCIL

NBC Universal has accepted a seat on the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council. The Council is the governing body which manages the development and implementation of ETCP, the industry-wide certification program for entertainment technicians.

January 30, 2009 - DISNEY THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS JOIN ETCP COUNCIL

September 24, 2008 - NEW COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT BETWEEN NATIONAL PRODUCTION SERVICES, INC. AND THE IATSE

The IATSE and National Production Services Inc have modified their current collective bargaining agreement to call for journeyman riggers employed by National Production Services Inc. to pass either the Theater or Arena Rigging Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) exam by December 2008.

May 28, 2008 - USITT ISSUES CHALLENGE GRANT FOR ETCP SUPPORT

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program announces that the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) has put forward a generous challenge grant of $50,000 over the next five years in their continuing support of the program. USITT has played a key role in the development of the certification program, both through their financial support and their active participation on the ETCP Council.

April 10, 2008 - SAFETY & HEALTH IN ARTS PRODUCTION & ENTERTAINMENT JOINS THE ETCP COUNCIL

Safety & Health in Arts Production & Entertainment (SHAPE) has accepted a seat on the ETCP Council.  SHAPE is a not-for-profit organization that was established in 1998 as the safety and health association for the performing arts and motion picture industry in British Columbia. This organization was created at the request of industry representatives and the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia in recognition of the unique nature of the entertainment industries.

February 15, 2008 - VETERANS ADMINISTRATION TO REIMBURSE ETCP EXAM FEES

Under new arrangements with the Veterans Administration, it is now possible for veterans to receive reimbursement for ETCP application fees. All three ETCP exams have been approved under the G.I. Bill. Veterans may seek reimbursement for up to one year after sitting for the exam and can receive up to $2000, but not more than the actual cost of the test. The benefits are paid whether or not a passing score is achieved, and an applicant can receive benefits to retake an exam that has not been passed. 

January 21, 2008 - LOS ANGELES CONVENTION CENTER IS FIRST MAJOR WEST COAST FACILITY TO REQUIRE ETCP CERTIFICATION FOR ALL RIGGING SUPERVISORS

Los Angeles, CA - January 18th, 2008 - The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) is the first major west coast convention center to take the lead on requiring all its rigging supervisor hires to be certified under Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP).  In an effort to enhance client and patron safety while meeting the challenges of ever increasing technical demands, LACC has revised its criteria that companies must meet in order to qualify for placement on their list of approved rigging contractors. One of the qualifications is that all rigging supervisors and managers must be ETCP Certified.  New vendors must meet these qualifications immediately to be considered for placement, while previously approved vendors have until the end of 2008 to certify their lead riggers.

August 27, 2007 - CIRQUE DU SOLEIL/MGM GRAND JOIN ETCP CERTIFICATION COUNCIL

Cirque du Soleil and their Las Vegas partner MGM / Mirage have accepted a seat on the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council. The Council is the governing body which manages the development and implementation of ETCP, the industry-wide certification program for entertainment technicians. The MGM / Mirage currently employs over 1500 technicians to support Cirque du Soleil operations.

June 14, 2007 - TWENTY-EIGHT ETCP RIGGING CERTIFICATIONS AWARDED TO MEMBERS OF IATSE LOCAL 873 - TORONTO

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is proud to announce that twenty-eight certifications were awarded today to members of IATSE Local 873. On May 12, 2007, both the Arena and Theatre Rigging exams were administered at the union hall in Toronto. Of the twenty-eight certifications granted, eleven individuals hold both certifications.

May 31, 2007 - Major Industry Employers Begin Mandating ETCP Certification

Two major industry employers, Live Nation and Global Spectrum, have announced the signing of collective bargaining agreements with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) which phase in a requirement for ETCP Certified Technicians in a variety of venues operated by the two companies.

May 24, 2007 - ETCP ANNOUNCES TRAINER RECOGNITION PROGRAM

The ETCP Council is pleased to announce a new program which recognizes individual instructors who have met specific criteria to become ETCP Recognized Trainers. The Certification Council has worked closely with leading trainers in the industry to craft a program that recognizes experienced trainers while allowing them the flexibility to adjust each class to the needs and skills of their attendees. Trainers are awarded qualification points based on a number of criteria including prior teaching experience, attendance at teacher training courses, ETCP Certification, standards writing, and subject matter expertise.

February 25, 2007 - TWENTY-EIGHT ETCP RIGGING CERTIFICATIONS AWARDED IN VANCOUVER

The ETCP Council is pleased to announce that twenty-six arena rigging and two theatre rigging certifications were recently awarded to riggers working in British Columbia and Alberta. Safety & Health in Arts Production and Entertainment (SHAPE), a B.C. based arts health and safety service organization, teamed up with Riggit, a provider of custom rigging in Western Canada, and IATSE to offer the examinations in Vancouver on January 21st.

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is proud to announce the first ETCP Certified Entertainment Electricians! These individuals have passed the rigorous, competency-based electrical examination which took place in October 2006. December 11, 2006 - ETCP Announces Exam Administrations at USITT 2007
The ETCP Council is pleased to announce the electrical, arena rigging, and theatre rigging examinations will be offered at the USITT Conference and Stage Expo on March 17, 2007 in Phoenix, AZ. Those who pass these rigorous tests will become ETCP Certified - and will be recognized as the industry’s best. Employers have already begun seeing the benefits of ETCP Certification in reduced insurance rates as well as attaining more work because their services are being performed by certified personnel.

What will this certification do for me? ETCP helps qualified riggers and electricians distinguish themselves by giving them a credential – ETCP Certified – that unmistakably says, "I know what I am doing." ETCP Certification helps employers immediately identify riggers and electricians with proven capabilities.

The listing of ETCP Certified Riggers is available on the ETCP website, and in late 2006 the ETCP Certified Entertainment Electricians list will be posted. Employers have already begun using the website when seeking qualified personnel.

Also, many major employers and unions have devoted many hours and dollars to this program with the intention to integrate this certification into job bids, contracts, etc. Service contracts are already requesting, and in some cases demanding, ETCP personnel.

August 24, 2006 - ETCP INTRODUCES NOVEMBER NEW YORK/LA EXAMS
The ETCP Council announces two new exam administrations will be held in 2006 in addition to those held at LDI. The electrical, arena rigging, and theatre rigging examinations will be offered in New York, NY (for IATSE Local One members only) and the Los Angeles area on Saturday, November 11, 2006.

August 09, 2006 - AUGUST NEWS: FINAL DEADLINE EXTENSTION TO SEPT 1, REDUCED RETAKE FEE
Due to the nature of our industry, ETCP understands that many candidates can not register until nearer to the examination date. Therefore, ETCP will extend the deadline one final time to September 1, 2006. This extension will accommodate those entertainment riggers and electricians who wish to take the October 2006 examinations in Las Vegas so they can attend the LDI show as well.

July 21, 2006 - August 1st Deadline Approaching!
Applicants who wish to take the first ETCP Entertainment Electrician examination must have their applications postmarked no later than August 1, 2006. Arena Rigging and Theatre Rigging candidates also need to have their applications sent by this date as well. Those who pass these rigorous tests will become ETCP Certified - and will be recognized as the industry’s best. Employers have already begun using the online ETCP Certificant listing as their first step when seeking new employees.

May 09, 2006 - ETCP Rigging Computer-Based Deadline Approaching
The next application deadline for the ETCP computer-based rigging examinations (arena and theatre) is June 1, 2006. Accepted candidates will be allowed to sit for their exam(s) in the third quarter (seating in July, August, and September). Those who pass this rigorous test will become ETCP Certified Riggers - and will be recognized as the industry’s best. Many employers are now searching for ETCP Certified Riggers online and have stated they may require certification in the future.

March 16, 2006 - ETCP ANNOUCES RECOGNITION FOR EMPLOYERS & LABOR PROVIDERS
The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council is pleased to announce the release of the Employer and Labor Provider Recognition Programs. These programs have been initiated to recognize employers who utilize ETCP Certified Technicians, as well as labor providers who provide ETCP Certified Technicians to job sites. Employers and labor providers who sign the best practices agreement will also agree to encourage their employees and workforce to become ETCP Certified Technicians. Organizations who agree to these best practices show a commitment to the enhancement of safety and reduction of risk in the workplace in our industry.

February 21, 2006 - ETCP ANNOUCES TRAINING RECOGNITION PROGRAM FOR RENEWAL CREDITS
The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council is pleased to announce the Rigging Training Recognition Program guidelines, application, and licensing requirements are now available. This program has been initiated to recognize rigging training programs for ETCP Renewal Credits. ETCP Certified Riggers are required to participate in on-going professional education to maintain their certification. After the launch of the Entertainment Electrician Examination in October 2006, ETCP will begin recognizing electrical training programs.

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council announces the appointment of Electrical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). These individuals, all highly respected in their field, have agreed to volunteer considerable time to the development of the industry’s first electrical certification. Selected for their breadth and depth of knowledge, the SMEs will work closely with the Council’s selected psychometric services provider, Applied Measurement Professionals (AMP), to develop the examinations.

March 01, 2005 - THE LEAGUE OF AMERICAN THEATRE AND PRODUCERS JOINS ETCP COUNCIL
New York, NY – The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) is pleased to announce that the League of American Theatres and Producers (the League) has accepted a seat on the ETCP Council. The League is the national trade association for the Broadway industry. The League’s 500-plus members include theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers in over 140 North American cities, as well as suppliers of goods and services to the theatre industry.

February 03, 2005 - ETCP Announces Rigging Subject Matter Experts

New York, NY – The Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA) is pleased to announce that Production Resource Group (PRG) has made a substantial $100,000 donation to the development of the new Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP). April 19, 2004 - IATSE LOCAL ONE Provides Major Support to ETCP
New York, NY – At its recent meeting, the Executive Board of Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) voted to contribute $50,000 to the development of the new Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP). Upon announcing the donation, Local One’s President Edward McConway commented, “This donation is an investment in the future of our membership. ETCP will bring us into the next generation of skills craftsmen that will perform our work safely. Hopefully, for the next 100 years.”

February 26, 2004 - ICIA JOINS ESTA CERTIFICATION COUNCIL
New York, NY – ICIA – The International Communications Industries Association, Inc.® (ICIA®), has accepted a permanent seat on the Entertainment Services and Technology Association’s (ESTA) new Certification Council. ICIA serves as the pre-eminent provider of education, exhibitions, and information services to its worldwide membership and the AV communications industry thus enhancing their ability to conduct business successfully, profitably and competently. The association is widely known for the prestigious InfoComm exhibition and conference. February 12, 2004 - IATSE Provides Major Support to ETCP
New York, NY – At its recent meeting, the General Executive Board of International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) voted to contribute $75,000 to the development of the new Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP). Upon announcing the donation, International President Thomas C. Short commented, “Assuring safety on the job is of paramount importance to our members. The new certification program is a step toward achieving a more secure working environment for our members.”

February 12, 2004 - AMPTP JOINS ESTA CERTIFICATION COUNCIL
New York, NY – AMPTP – The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), has accepted a permanent seat on Entertainment Services and Technology Association’s (ESTA) new Certification Council. The AMPTP is the primary trade association with respect to labor issues in the motion picture and television industry. AMPTP negotiates 80 industry-wide collective bargaining agreements that cover actors, craftpersons, directors, musicians, technicians, and writers - virtually all of the people who work on theatrical motion pictures and television programs. The Certification Council is the governing body which is managing the development and implementation of a new industry-wide certification program for entertainment technology technicians.

December 03, 2003 - USITT Provides Major Support to ETCP
New York, NY – At its recent meeting, the Board of Directors of United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Inc. voted to contribute $75,000 to the development of the new Entertainment Technician Certification Program. Upon announcing the donation, USITT President Bruce Brockman commented, "USITT is pleased to able to support the ETCP and believes that it will have significant impact on the industry and on our members. This kind of professional support is central to the mission of USITT and its members."

November 14, 2003 - J.R. Clancy Kicks-Off ETCP Fundraising Campaign
New York, NY – J.R. Clancy, Inc. has generously stepped forward with a major donation of $25,000 to launch the fundraising campaign for the new Entertainment Technician Certification Program. Bob Theis, Chairman of J.R. Clancy commented, “Since one of Clancy's ‘Key Priorities’ is safety, we felt it essential to support the Entertainment Technician Certification Program. We've been leaders in improving equipment, installation, and user safety through product testing, engineering analysis, and training. It's just natural for us to participate.”

October 30, 2003 - CITT / ICTS JOINS ESTA CERTIFICATION COUNCIL
New York, NY – CITT / ICTS – the Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology has accepted a permanent seat on ESTA’s Certification Council. The Certification Council is the governing body which will manage the development and implementation of the new industry-wide Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP). CITT President Ron Morissette will serve as the CITT / ICTS representative on the Council with an alternate member to be named soon.

September 29, 2003 - TEA JOINS ESTA CERTIFICATION COUNCIL
New York, NY – TEA – The Themed Entertainment Association, a worldwide trade organization that gathers together, supports and represents the people and firms who create compelling places and experiences, has accepted a permanent seat on ESTA’s new Certification Council. The Certification Council is the governing body which will manage the development and implementation of a new industry-wide certification program for entertainment technology technicians.

September 24, 2003 - Certification Council Holds First Meeting
New York, NY – The inaugural meeting of ESTA’s new Certification Council took place September 19th and 20th in New York City. The Certification Council is the governing body for the new Entertainment Technician Certification Program and, after being welcomed by ESTA president Mike Wood, Council members quickly got down to work under the leadership of chair Tim Hansen.

The Certification Council is the governing body which will manage the development and implementation of a new industry-wide certification program for entertainment technology technicians. The key areas of electrical skills and rigging skills have been identified for initial development in the ESTA Personnel Certification Program.

March 20, 2003 - ESTA ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF CERTIFICATION BUSINESS PLAN
Minneapolis, MN -- The ESTA Board of Directors has voted unanimously to approve a detailed business plan to establish a personnel certification program for entertainment technology technicians provided the required funds can be raised. Two key areas have been identified for initial development - electrical skills and rigging skills. In addition, a curriculum based certificate program will be created to address essential skills which comprise a fundamental body of knowledge needed to work in the entertainment industry.

- ETCP EXAMS AT LDI 2008 – DEADLINE NEXT FRIDAY (9/26/2008)
All three ETCP examinations will be given at the October 2008 LDI show in Las Vegas, NV. The entertainment electrician exam is scheduled for Friday, October 24th; the arena rigging exam is to be given the morning of Saturday, October 25th and the theatre rigging exam is scheduled for that afternoon.  Candidates who wish to take multiple exams will receive a discount for the second exam. Interested applicants must submit their application, along with supporting materials and fee, to the ETCP office no later than September 25, 2008. Space is limited, so encourage them to get their applications in soon!
