October 10, 2023 - NATEAC 2024 Opens Request for Proposals
The North American Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference (NATEAC) is a quadrennial event with sessions on a variety of topics relevant to the design and construction of performance venues. The producer of the event, the Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA), is now accepting proposals for sessions for the July 2024 conference, which will be held in Brooklyn, New York.

ESTA is pleased to announce a team of nine ETCP Recognized Trainers as the recipients of the Frank Stewart Volunteer of the Year Award for service in both 2022 and 2023: Bennett Brian (Reed Rigging, Inc.), Tyler DeLong (DeLong Rigging Solutions), Brent "Mickey" Henry (ETC), Shane Kelly (DePaul University), Rebecca Knipfer (ETC), Ed Leahy (The Chicago Flyhouse, Inc.), Verda Beth Martell (DLR Group), Tracy Nunnally (Vertigo), and Patrick Stewart (ETC), whose father is the award's namesake. These trainers tirelessly volunteered around their busy schedules to plan, design, and deliver a curriculum for the Midwest Rigging Intensive (MRI) two years in a row.

May 28, 2020 - Remote Proctoring Option Now Available for All Four ETCP Examinations
Owing to the health concerns raised by the COVID-19 global pandemic, the ETCP Council has approved the implementation of remote testing with an online proctor. This new delivery option provides test-takers flexibility and convenience at a time when public health is of the utmost importance. ETCP has worked with PSI to be able to offer innovative test-taking procedures to ensure continuity in its highly regarded certification program. The Council is excited to announce that this new convenient option will now become a permanent testing solution for those who are on the road, live far from a testing center, or candidates whose work schedules prevent them from taking time off to test.

Behind the Scenes, in response to concerns about the rising number of suicides and the prevalence of alcohol/substance misuse within the entertainment industry, is beginning work on a Mental Health and Suicide Prevention initiative and wants to get a sense of how many people in the industry are experiencing anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, problems with alcohol/substance misuse, or reactions to traumatic events.

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) will be celebrating its 15th year in 2020, and to celebrate, we would like to launch a new cover for each handbook. We are asking ETCP Certified Technicians to show us how they see art in what they do every day. We encourage artistic interpretation and are looking for something fresh. Only digital Images may be submitted: photos, graphics, illustrations, renderings and other artistic mediums will be considered. Only ETCP Certified Technicians may enter the contest.

December 15, 2018 - ETCP Testing Company Gives Practice Exam Candidates More Time to Get it Right
Beginning December 15, 2018, candidates who purchase the ETCP Practice Examinations will now have a 90-day window to complete the Web-based exams, rather than the previous one of 30 days. There is no application process with the practice exams and any interested candidates will be able to take the exams privately at home, at the office, or on the road whenever it is most convenient for them.

January 18, 2017 - Deadline for ETCP Applications for USITT 2017 Approaching
All four ETCP examinations will be given on one session at USITT in St. Louis, MO on the morning of Saturday, March 11, 2017. The deadline is quickly approaching. Interested applicants must submit their application, along with supporting materials and fee, to the ETCP office no later than February 14, 2017. The ETCP office is located at 630 9th Ave, Suite 609, New York, New York, 10036. USITT members and employees receive a $100 discount on examination fees.

January 16, 2017 - ETCP LAUNCHES SECOND SET OF WEB-BASED ENTERTAINMENT ELECTRICIAN PRACTICE EXAMS

November 14, 2016 - ETCP Class of 2006 Entertainment Electricians Achieve 94% Renewal Rate
ETCP is pleased to announce an extremely high renewal rate for its original Entertainment Electrician certificants. A decade ago, almost 100 candidates from North America gained their ETCP Certifications at LDI in Las Vegas, NV. This year in October, 94% of the inaugural class of 2006 renewed their certifications as their second 5-year renewal was due to expire.

November 08, 2016 - The Event Safety Alliance Joins ETCP Council
The Event Safety Alliance (ESA) has accepted a seat on the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council and Steve Adelman, Head, Adelman Law Group, PPLC will serve as the representative. The ETCP Council is the governing body which manages the development and implementation of ETCP’s certification in the areas of Rigger – Arena, Rigger – Theatre, Entertainment Electricians and Portable Power Distribution Technician.

November 08, 2016 - New Online Training to be Offered by ETC
Electronic Theatre Control (ETC) is launching four new ETCP Recognized Courses that can be taken to provide points towards the continuing education requirement for ETCP renewals. Each class takes about an hour to complete and one credit will be issued per course. “We’re excited to offer a new set of resources to our growing number of customers,” says ETC class creator, David Fox.

August 31, 2016 - Deadline for ETCP Testing Opportunities at LDI 2016 Approaching
All four ETCP examinations, including the new Portable Power Distribution Technician Certification (PPDT), will be offered at LDI in Las Vegas, NV on the morning of Saturday, October 22, 2016. Interested applicants must submit their application and fee to the ETCP office no later than September 26, 2016. 

January 04, 2016 - Ninety Percent Second Time Renewal Rate for ETCP Class of 2005 Riggers
ETCP is pleased to announce an extremely high renewal rate for its original certificants. A decade ago, over 200 riggers from North America gained their ETCP Certifications at LDI in Orlando, FL. Last November, 90% of the inaugural class of 2005 decided to renew their certifications as the term of their second 5-year renewal was due to expire. The majority of those who chose not to renew their certifications have retired from the industry.

September 18, 2015 - ETCP Council Approves New Power Distribution Technician Certification
PLASA’s ETCP Council has voted unanimously to offer a brand new certification focusing on Power Distribution Technicians (ETCP – PDT). The new program is in response to an increasing demand within the entertainment industry to establish benchmark standards and define the required knowledge and skillsets surrounding the assembly, use, and disassembly of power distribution systems for a wide variety of entertainment venues and markets. These include the corporate, trade show, outdoor event, theatrical, and motion picture/television segments of the industry. The development of the program has been fully funded by sponsorships.

July 21, 2013 - IATSE Local One Certified 30 Additional ETCP Theatre Riggers
More than 30 International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local One members passed the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Rigger - Theatre examination in June, which brings the total number of certified riggers in Local One to 85. The New York Local now has more ETCP certified technicians that any other in North America.

July 17, 2013 - OVER TWO HUNDRED BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS ARE ETCP RECOGNIZED

January 15, 2013 - IATSE Training Trust Reimburses Cost of ETCP Certification/Recertification
ETCP announces the IATSE Entertainment and Exhibition Industries Training Trust Fund has initiated a program to offer reimbursement to those who take and pass any of the three ETCP examinations: rigger - arena, rigger - theatre, and entertainment electrician.

November 19, 2010 - 94% OF INAUGURAL ETCP RIGGING CERTIFICANTS RENEW

The Class of 2005 ETCP Certified Riggers who passed the inaugural examinations came up for renewal this November, as certification is valid for five years.  Two-hundred and seven Rigger-Arena and Rigger-Theatre certifications were awarded and 94% of these certifications have been renewed.  Those who are in the Class of 2006 ETCP Certified Entertainment Electricians will come up for renewal in October of 2011.

July 20, 2010 - NAVIGATOR AUTOMATION TRAINING THROUGH FISHER TECHNICAL SERVICES BECOMES AN ETCP RECOGNIZED TRAINING PROGRAM

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is pleased to announce that the Navigator Automation Class at Fisher Technical Services, Inc. (FTSI) has been approved as an ETCP Recognized Training Program. FTSI's four-day course gives students an overall view of the principles of entertainment automation systems and teaches the basics of how to configure and program an automation system using FTSI's "Navigator" hardware and software.

July 15, 2010 - ACADEMY OF PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY (APT) BECOMES

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is pleased to announce that the Academy of Production Technology (APT) has been approved to become an ETCP Recognized Training Program. The Academy's three-day course covers the concept of electrical theory, power distribution and networking for stage and studio. Course instructor is APT Founder Richard Cadena, who is an ETCP Certified Entertainment Electrician and Recognized Trainer. Now that the course is recognized, ETCP Certified Technicians who attend will receive full ETCP Renewal Credits.

July 09, 2009 - TEN NEW ETCP TESTING CENTERS AVAILABLE IN CANADA

ETCP is pleased to announce that there are ten new testing centers in Canada. All three exams are now available for computer-based testing in Ontario at Sylvan Learning Centres in the cities of Courtice, Etobicoke, Oakville, Pickering, Scarborough, Vaughn and at three locations in Mississauga. Testing is also available at Robertson College in Winnipeg, MB.

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) will launch practice exams for the Rigger - Arena, Rigger - Theatre and Entertainment Electrician certification exams on July 15, 2009. The web-based practice exams will consist of fifty questions and are available from that date forward for thirty-five dollars at http://www.goamp.com/. Candidates should go to the "Candidates" and then follow the menu to ETCP where can choose one of the three exams.

May 13, 2009 - NEW ETCP COMPUTER-BASED TESTING AVAILABLE IN CANADA
ETCP is pleased to announce that there is a new testing center in Canada. All three exams are now available for computer-based testing at Robertson College, 265 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

March 09, 2009 - SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTER REQUIRES ETCP CERTIFIED RIGGING SUPERVISORS

In an effort to effectively insure life safety and maintain the structural integrity of the space, the award-winning San Diego Convention Center has revised its rigging requirements. Among the new requirements, the policy states that all rigging installations must be done under the supervision of a Rigging Supervisor who is certified through the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP).

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program announces that the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) has put forward a generous challenge grant of $50,000 over the next five years in their continuing support of the program. USITT has played a key role in the development of the certification program, both through their financial support and their active participation on the ETCP Council.

Safety & Health in Arts Production & Entertainment (SHAPE) has accepted a seat on the ETCP Council.  SHAPE is a not-for-profit organization that was established in 1998 as the safety and health association for the performing arts and motion picture industry in British Columbia. February 15, 2008 - VETERANS ADMINISTRATION TO REIMBURSE ETCP EXAM FEES

Under new arrangements with the Veterans Administration, it is now possible for veterans to receive reimbursement for ETCP application fees. All three ETCP exams have been approved under the G.I. Bill. Veterans may seek reimbursement for up to one year after sitting for the exam and can receive up to $2000, but not more than the actual cost of the test. The benefits are paid whether or not a passing score is achieved, and an applicant can receive benefits to retake an exam that has not been passed. 

January 21, 2008 - LOS ANGELES CONVENTION CENTER IS FIRST MAJOR WEST COAST FACILITY TO REQUIRE ETCP CERTIFICATION FOR ALL RIGGING SUPERVISORS

Los Angeles, CA - January 18th, 2008 - The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) is the first major west coast convention center to take the lead on requiring all its rigging supervisor hires to be certified under Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP).  In an effort to enhance client and patron safety while meeting the challenges of ever increasing technical demands, LACC has revised its criteria that companies must meet in order to qualify for placement on their list of approved rigging contractors. One of the qualifications is that all rigging supervisors and managers must be ETCP Certified.  New vendors must meet these qualifications immediately to be considered for placement, while previously approved vendors have until the end of 2008 to certify their lead riggers.

Cirque du Soleil and their Las Vegas partner MGM / Mirage have accepted a seat on the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council. June 14, 2007 - TWENTY-EIGHT ETCP RIGGING CERTIFICATIONS AWARDED TO MEMBERS OF IATSE LOCAL 873 - TORONTO

The Entertainment Technician Certification Program Council is proud to announce that twenty-eight certifications were awarded today to members of IATSE Local 873. On May 12, 2007, both the Arena and Theatre Rigging exams were administered at the union hall in Toronto. Of the twenty-eight certifications granted, eleven individuals hold both certifications.

May 31, 2007 - Major Industry Employers Begin Mandating ETCP Certification

Two major industry employers, Live Nation and Global Spectrum, have announced the signing of collective bargaining agreements with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) which phase in a requirement for ETCP Certified Technicians in a variety of venues operated by the two companies.

The ETCP Council is pleased to announce a new program which recognizes individual instructors who have met specific criteria to become ETCP Recognized Trainers. The Certification Council has worked closely with leading trainers in the industry to craft a program that recognizes experienced trainers while allowing them the flexibility to adjust each class to the needs and skills of their attendees. Trainers are awarded qualification points based on a number of criteria including prior teaching experience, attendance at teacher training courses, ETCP Certification, standards writing, and subject matter expertise.

What will this certification do for me? ETCP helps qualified riggers and electricians distinguish themselves by giving them a credential – ETCP Certified – that unmistakably says, "I know what I am doing." ETCP Certification helps employers immediately identify riggers and electricians with proven capabilities.

The listing of ETCP Certified Riggers is available on the ETCP website, and in late 2006 the ETCP Certified Entertainment Electricians list will be posted. Employers have already begun using the website when seeking qualified personnel.

Also, many major employers and unions have devoted many hours and dollars to this program with the intention to integrate this certification into job bids, contracts, etc. Service contracts are already requesting, and in some cases demanding, ETCP personnel.

August 09, 2006 - AUGUST NEWS: FINAL DEADLINE EXTENSTION TO SEPT 1, REDUCED RETAKE FEE
Due to the nature of our industry, ETCP understands that many candidates can not register until nearer to the examination date. Therefore, ETCP will extend the deadline one final time to September 1, 2006. This extension will accommodate those entertainment riggers and electricians who wish to take the October 2006 examinations in Las Vegas so they can attend the LDI show as well.

July 21, 2006 - August 1st Deadline Approaching!

May 13, 2003 - IATSE JOINS ESTA CERTIFICATION COUNCIL
New York, NY – IATSE - The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada has accepted a permanent seat on ESTA’s new Certification Council. The Certification Council is the governing body which will manage the development and implementation of a new industry-wide certification program for entertainment technology technicians. The key areas of electrical skills and rigging skills have been identified for initial development in the ESTA Personnel Certification Program.

March 20, 2003 - ESTA ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF CERTIFICATION BUSINESS PLAN
Minneapolis, MN -- The ESTA Board of Directors has voted unanimously to approve a detailed business plan to establish a personnel certification program for entertainment technology technicians provided the required funds can be raised. Two key areas have been identified for initial development - electrical skills and rigging skills. In addition, a curriculum based certificate program will be created to address essential skills which comprise a fundamental body of knowledge needed to work in the entertainment industry.

- ETCP EXAMS AT LDI 2008 – DEADLINE NEXT FRIDAY (9/26/2008)
All three ETCP examinations will be given at the October 2008 LDI show in Las Vegas, NV. The entertainment electrician exam is scheduled for Friday, October 24th; the arena rigging exam is to be given the morning of Saturday, October 25th and the theatre rigging exam is scheduled for that afternoon.  Candidates who wish to take multiple exams will receive a discount for the second exam. Interested applicants must submit their application, along with supporting materials and fee, to the ETCP office no later than September 25, 2008. Space is limited, so encourage them to get their applications in soon!
